Notes ------
As this part of the song is an instrumental its difficult to keep track of where you are in the TAB. To make things easier, the TAB is broken into sections and the CD times included where they occur.
Most of 'Smash It Up (Part 1)' uses arpeggiated chord shapes. Some of the shapes used are normal, first position chords - others are common chord shapes which are moved 'out of position'. The song is in 4/4 time.
If you look at some of the chord names above the TAB stave - things seem a little 'jazzy' with all those 9th and 11th chords lying about. The piece isn't complicated - the expensive sounding chord names come about as a result of moving simple chord shapes up the neck. If you view the TAB, looking for out of position chord shapes then the whole thing is alot easier to learn ....
Section A uses A11 and D11 chords. These are just common G and Cmaj7 shapes, moved up the neck by 2 frets.
Section B uses the same shapes as in section A, along with F9(no 3rd) - which is a variant of Fminor at the first fret.
Section C uses the same shapes as in section B.
Section D uses diads based on D5 and D9, along with Cmajor and the shapes used in in section A. Check with the record/CD to get the emphasis on picking right for the 4-bars of Cmajor
Section E uses Em6, Em7 and Em9 chords. These chords are all formed by adding a simple melody to a basic Em chord. This section also uses C and D11 chords. The D11 chord is formed by taking the standard C shape and moving it up 2 frets.
Section F uses standard G, Eminor, D and Dsus2 chord shapes. These chords are played loosely, with open strings being sounded between some of the chord changes.
The guitar sound is 'clean' with a very small amount of delay added, in places a slight flanging effect is also present.
