Subject: CRD: Out Among the Stars by Merle Haggard

This is the title song of one of Marvelous Merle's albums that I believe
came out around 1986 (at least that's around when I bought it). I thought the
song was awsome, and a great "kicker" tune with a little bonus: like many
of Merle's songs there's a subtle societal message. I worked the chords out
from the album, so it's all my own work and may not be perfectly accurate,
but it works for me. Hope it does for you, too.

Out Among the Stars -- Merle Haggard

Verse 1:
F Bb
It's midnight at a liquor store in Texas.
F C7
Beneath the neon, close up's just begun.
F Bb G
When a boy walks in the door and points a pistol.
F C7 F
He can't find a job, but man, he's found a gun.

Verse 2:
F Bb
But a change of heart before there's confrontation.
F C7
Let's the old man live and run out in the street.
F Bb G
But he knows that soon they'll come with guns a blazing.
F C7 F
And already he can feel a great relief.

Chorus:
F Bb
Oh how many travlers get weary,
F C7
Bearing both their burdens and their scars,
F Bb G
Don't you think they'd love to stop complaining,
F C7 F
and fly like eagles out among the stars.

Verse 3:
F Bb
He pictures the arrival of the cruisers.
F C7
Sees that old familiar anger in their eyes.
F Bb G
He knows that when they're shooting at this loser,
F C7 F
They'll be aiming at the deamons in their lives.

Chorus:
F Bb
Oh how many travlers get weary,
F C7
Bearing both their burdens and their scars,
F Bb G
Don't you think they'd love to stop complaining,
F C7 F
and fly like eagles out among the stars.

Verse 4:
F Bb
The evening news it carries all the details.
F C7
He dies in every living room in town.
F Bb G
And in his home a bottle's thrown in anger.
F C7 F
And his father cries, "We'll never live this down."

Chorus:
F Bb
Oh how many travlers get weary,
F C7
Bearing both their burdens and their scars,
F Bb G
Don't you think they'd love to stop complaining,
F C7 F
and fly like eagles out among the stars.

F C7 F
Oh-Oh, and fly like eagles out among the stars.
